The Drawer of Random

Zanary

Every tower has one drawer that refuses to be organised. This is the web version.

Things that fit nowhere else: a portrait of an aardvark, three facts that are all true, and whatever else has escaped from the workshop this week. There is no theme. The absence of a theme is, technically, the theme.

Exhibit Zero

The Aardvark

He was promised a page. The page was renamed around him. He did not flinch.

Orycteropus afer — the aardvark. First word in the dictionary, last animal to answer for it. He did not pose for this. He simply is.
Three True Facts

What You Are Looking At

Every claim below is verifiably true. In a drawer like this one, that should frighten you a little.

01

Not a pig

The name is Afrikaans for “earth pig.” He is not a pig. He is not even pig-adjacent. He has simply chosen not to correct anyone for several centuries.

02

Fast digger

He can dig himself completely out of sight in minutes, and he eats termites by the tens of thousands in a single night. Per night. Nobody is discussing this enough.

03

Strange family

His nearest living relatives include elephants and manatees. Picture that family reunion. Picture the seating chart. He brings the termites.

Odds & Ends

Loose Items

Assorted small things rattling around at the back. Handle them, put them back, tell no one.

04

The hat is load-bearing

It appears in the favicon, the logo, and roughly every second sentence. Remove it and the whole site becomes a very tidy résumé, which nobody wants.

05

The tabs are almost alphabetised

Exhibits, Incantations, Lineage, Owlery, Zanary — tidy. Then Nexus barges to the front because it is the front door, and Alliances holds the end because allies get the last word.

06

Nothing here is for sale

No newsletter, no funnel, no popup asking whether you are enjoying the popup. If you want the actual work it is one arch over, in the Exhibits.

The Drawer Is Closed

That was it. That was the drawer.

You saw the aardvark. The aardvark, in some sense, saw you. Found something strange enough to belong in here? Fly it through the Owlery and it may get a shelf of its own.
